A new stage in the construction of U400R experimental hall has begun
On December 21, 2023 a new stage in the construction of U400R experimental hall – pouring concrete into the building foundation – has begun at FLNR. U400R complex is created on the basis of U400 heavy ion accelerator which has been operating at the Laboratory since 1978. Synthesis of superheavy elements is this cyclotron main direction of research.
Pouring the first cubic meters of concrete into the experimental building foundation
Many years of efforts by the FLNR JINR team led by academician Yuri Tsolakovich Oganessian resulted in recognition of JINR’s priority in discovery of elements 114-118 of D.I.Mendeleev Periodic Table. The further development of work in the field of synthesis and study of properties of superheavy elements is associated with the Factory of Superheavy Elements which was put into operation and has been operating successfully since 2020. The creation of the new U400R accelerator complex includes a deep modernization of the existing U400 cyclotron into U400R cyclotron, construction of a new experimental hall and creation of new experimental setups. The new separators will be located in three radiation-insulated cabins of the experimental hall which will make it possible to prepare other setups for the experiment while working with a beam at one of the setups.
Creation of a new U400R accelerator complex will make it possible to expand the Laboratory capacities and carry out advanced research in the field of studying perspective nuclear reactions, obtaining with their help new, unknown yet nuclei, studying their properties as well as applied research in testing electron components used in the space industry.
