Micromechanical testing of metallic alloys with swift heavy ions

This report highlights the potential of nanoindentation as a perspective technique for studying the evolution of mechanical properties in materials subjected to irradiation by swift heavy ions with fission fragment energies. A brief overview is provided of promising reactor materials, including oxide-dispersion-strengthened ferritic steels, high-entropy alloys, and amorphous aluminum-based alloys. The work outlines key scientific challenges that can be addressed using the advanced experimental capabilities of the FLNR JINR, and reports first results on irradiation-induced modifications in the mechanical behavior and microstructural characteristics of these materials.
